The 1854 windmill with the Aegean beyond

The Windmill

Three floors inside the largest windmill on Sifnos, for 2 to 4 guests.

Spithas’ Windmill was built in 1854, according to the marble plaque above its door, and it is the largest of the sixty windmills that once worked on Sifnos. It is a listed building, and its machinery is still in place.

The kitchen and bathroom are on the ground floor. A wooden staircase climbs to the first floor, where a double bed fits between the curved walls, and on to the top floor, where a second, purpose-built double bed sits beside the millstones and the great wooden gear wheel.

Outside, the large courtyard under its pergola looks out over the Aegean and the mountains and villages of Sifnos.

The floors are connected by internal wooden staircases, worth keeping in mind if you are travelling with small children or find stairs difficult.
